You can play a rummy game with two or more players; you’ll need two decks of cards for more than six players. You play by improving the hands you are dealt with. To improve your card, whenever it’s your turn to play, you can draw cards from the stock or pick the card thrown by the opponent. You can play online rummy games on different platforms.

The Objective Of Rummy

The objective of the rummy is to make the sequence out of dealt cards to a player, and according to the rummy rules, the first player who successfully makes the sequence out of the dealt cards with one card remaining to throw is the winner.

You can set the sequence in three types: pure, impure, or set. Out of all the sequences you make, one must be pure.

Note: There are a lot of variations played around the world, so there can be variations in rummy rules. In this guide, we have explained the game with jokers and wild cards. In a rummy deck, you’ll find a Printed Joker and a Wild Card chosen at random at the start of the game. Both cards serve the same purpose: they help form sets and impure sequences. You can use a Joker or wild card to replace any needed number when creating these groups, making it a valid move in rummy.

Pure Sequence (Runs): In rummy, a pure sequence is made up of three or more cards from the same suit in consecutive order. You can’t use any jokers or wild cards to form a pure sequence.

Example:

7♥ 8♥ 9♥: Pure sequence with three cards
7♠ 8♠ 9♠ 10♠: Pure sequence with four cards

7♠ 8♠ 9♥ 10♠: Not a valid sequence according to the rummy rules, until 9♥ is a wild card.

Impure Sequence (With Joker or Wild Cards): When you use a Joker or wild card to form a pure sequence, it is known as an impure sequence.

Example:

2♦ 3♦ K♠ 5♦: Here K♠ is a wild card used in place of 4♦.

2♠ J 4♠ 5♠: Here, J (Joker card) is used in place of 3♠.

Sets: Sets are three or four cards of the same rank. Unlike the pure and impure sequences, sets can be of different suits. Also, you can use a wild card or joker when forming a suit.

Example:

3♦ 3♣ 3♠ 3♥: Set is formed with four 3 cards of different suits.

K♦ K♣ K♠ J: Here, Joker is the replacing K♥ to make a set.

How to Play Rummy Game ?

Now you know how to make sequences; by following rummy rules and instructions, you’ll know how to play the rummy game:

  1. At the beginning of the game, each player gets the same number of cards. The number of cards depends on how many people are playing. If there are 2, 3, or 4 players, each person gets 10 cards. With 5 players, everyone gets 7 cards. For more than 5 players, you need two decks and deal 7 cards each. The exact number of cards isn’t strict; you can adjust it to fit the game.
  2. The dealer hands out the cards and places the remaining deck face-down in the center of the table. Then, the dealer takes the top card from the deck and places it face-up next to the stack, starting the discard pile.
  3. Now, the player starting the game has the option to choose a card from the stockpile of the undealt cards or choose the one card placed face up. Now, he can make the sequence or set from the picked card if he is able to and must throw a card he thinks is not of his use.
  4. The next player can choose to pick up either the last card discarded by the previous player or the top card from the stock. They can then meld some or all of their cards into combinations and put them down. The play continues around the table until someone is able to make all the cards in set or sequences, and If the stock runs out, shuffle the discard pile and set it up again.

Collecting Points in Rummy

The winner gathers points from all the other players based on the cards left in their hands, whether those cards form completed combinations or not. So, keep in mind that you should put down your melds as soon as you get them.

The players place their cards face-up on the table and announce their remaining points. You score the cards as follows: 2s through 10s are worth their face value, so a 6 is worth 6 points. Jacks, queens, and kings each earn 10 points. If you’re using wild cards, they cost 15 points each. Aces only count for 1 point.
