The recent finding of a deceased and severely abused two-year-old in a Las Vegas dumpster has resulted in murder charges being filed against the child’s parents.
The deceased toddler, identified as Jacoby Robinson Jr., was found to have suffered from a brain bleed and “significant” injuries to his buttocks, head, and torso, according to a medical examination conducted after his death.
Doctors stated that these injuries were consistent with child abuse, as reported by Las Vegas TV station KVVU.
Jacoby Robinson Jr.’s mother, Diaja Smith, 23, and father, Jacoby Robinson Sr., 24, have been charged with open murder and child abuse. Both individuals were booked into the Clark County Detention Center on Friday.
As of Wednesday, they remained in custody without bail.
Local police became involved after Diaja Smith reported her two-year-old son, Jacoby Robinson Jr., as “missing” on Friday, claiming he had disappeared at a park.
Smith had been seen pushing the child and his siblings in a stroller. However, upon reviewing surveillance footage, police noted that the baby did not appear to be moving while in the stroller.
Subsequently, police investigations revealed that Smith had walked to Lewis Avenue in Downtown Las Vegas, where she allegedly disposed of the boy’s deceased body in a dumpster on Friday.
According to a report from the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD), Smith took extensive measures to conceal the murder, including moving the body, fabricating a false missing person report, and providing false information to detectives.
On June 6, Jacoby Robinson Sr. reported to police that while he was asleep at their apartment, he heard “high-pitched” screaming from a child. Robinson stated that Diaja Smith had been physically abusing the two-year-old boy. Later, Robinson informed police that he performed CPR on the child due to his injuries but claimed he was unaware of the child’s location or that he had died.
Robinson also disclosed to police that Smith had a history of excessive discipline, including the use of a belt or charging cord.
Another child, the twin of the deceased boy, was discovered to have sustained injuries and suffered from a brain bleed. The child remained in critical condition at a local hospital, as reported by Las Vegas TV station KLAS.
Smith attributed the injuries to the child falling off a bicycle and denied any allegations of abusing her children, according to the police.
Nevada Child Protective Services (CPS) took custody of one of the other siblings, according to KVVU. Authorities noted that CPS had previously taken custody of Smith’s children in the past.
Robinson fathered multiple children with Smith and resided at her apartment approximately four days a week.
KLAS reported that Diaja Smith is currently pregnant, according to LaSwanda Williams, the great-aunt of the deceased child. Williams spoke to a reporter and shared fond memories of the victim.
“He was a lovable child,” Williams told KLAS about the murdered two-year-old. “He didn’t deserve that. He was not trash. He was not a piece of paper you just pick up and throw in a dumpster.”
