Sydney’s Star Casino has obtained a court injunction against an individual who attempted to blackmail the casino following his unsuccessful job application.
The individual, identified in court documents as “AB,” applied for a job at Sydney’s Star Casino in January, according to Australia’s Daily Telegraph. However, his application was unsuccessful due to a routine police check revealing that he had not disclosed his extensive criminal record. His record included convictions for dishonesty, car theft, breaching domestic violence orders, and various traffic offenses.

On April 7, a week after being rejected for a job at Star Casino, AB emailed the casino’s HR department demanding the termination of his ex-girlfriend, a manager there. Threatening to expose customers’ banking and privacy data to the public, AB included screenshots of confidential customer information from the casino’s database, which he had obtained from his ex-girlfriend’s phone without authorization. The casino promptly warned AB of potential legal consequences, but he persisted with his demands.
Facing imminent legal action, AB was served with a summons within 48 hours, leading to the NSW Supreme Court granting a permanent injunction to prevent him from disclosing any data. Despite his initial threats, AB later apologized, attributing his behavior to substance abuse and claiming a lack of memory due to being under the influence. He subsequently entered rehabilitation and expressed remorse, urging that his ex-girlfriend not be punished for his actions.
Whether AB will face criminal charges remains uncertain amid the ongoing legal and personal repercussions of his actions.
